BBC Scraperboards

Charles Tunnicliffe's scraperboard drawings were often published in
editions of Radio Times. The BBC would send him a request for a drawing
about a programme and and wanted it by return - so he had to work on it
quickly and then put it in the post the following day. Scraperboard is easily
cracked, so Tunnicliffe would glue a piece of scraperboard on to a piece of
thicker material, such as hardboard, before working on the illustration.
This was also important to avoid possible damage during transit by mail
to the BBC. He created 112+ scraperboard illustrations for Radio Times.
Tracking down details about publication dates, programmes and regional
editions of Radio Times with these illustrationsis in them is a huge task.
For now here are a few examples of Tunnicliffe's BBC scraperboards.
